The Lakers got a lead early in this one and held onto it. A couple of small runs in the first two quarters gave them a 9-point lead at the half. The Lakers really moved away from them in the 3rd with a 19-7 run. Shaq, hampered by fouls in the first half, had a big quarter.

The Pacers folded up their tent after that and rested most of their starters for the 4th as they never got anything going offensively. This was the 2nd game in a row the Lakers badly outshot their opponent -- 48% to 39%, and 43% to 21% from 3-point range. Shaq ended up scoring over a point-a-minute. No one else had big numbers, but there were many contributors.

Indiana 77 LA Lakers 99

A 32-point half-time lead should give you a win, and it did for the Kings. Sojakovic, along with Divac and Miller, lead Sacramento in that stretch. The Nets never got any runs going until it was far too late.

A brief Spurs lead was erased in the 1st quarter by a 19-8 run and the Lakers never looked back in this one. Malone and Payton made the biggest contributions and the LA had a 9-point lead.

After a fairly even 2nd, the Lakers poured in on again in the 3rd. Devean and Kobe scored, Karl helped, and Gary did both. Shaq had a slow game in his first back from a sore heel. No starter on either team, other than Nesterovic, played in the 4th.

After 7 points in the 1st quarter, Ginobili had only 6 the rest of the way. Duncan never got his shot going and tried to help in other ways, but it wasn't enough. No one scored more than 13 for the Spurs and they shot only 39% and 20% to the Lakers 53% and 60%.

The Lakers' 10-0 run early in the 1st quarter was really all that they needed this night. It was smooth sailing after that period and the firepower provided by George, Malone, Payton and Kobe. Slava, Fish, and Rush took over in the 2nd as the Lakers continued to pour it on. The Wizards finally made some runs late in the game -- mostly in garbage time -- but it was too little too late.

November 24, 2003

I'll be off for the next week on vacation. So there will be no GameFlows until I get back. I promise to catch up when I return and I hope everyone has a good holiday.

All four visiting teams win tonight.
I'm sorry I missed this one. Atlanta looked to be in control of this one half-way through the 3rd quarter when a 13-2 run gave them a game high 16-point lead. Then Detroit began it's onslaught of 3 consecutive runs which earned them a 6-point lead with 1:34 left in the game. The Hawks finally responed with a 7-0 run in the next 1:16 to get back a 1-point lead. But the Pistons were not to be denied and managed to score 6 unanswered points -- all fron the free throw line -- in just 13 seconds to win by 5.

The usual suspects were all in form tonight. Wallace (15 reb), Billups, Abdur-Rahim, and Terry all had good games. Detroit also so got a very good performance from Prince.
Detroit Pistons 94 Atlanta Hawks 83

The Magic started off strong tonight. But that ended with a 26-12 Pacers run in the 2nd quarter. Big contribution from Croshere off the bench during that run, as well as O'Neal and Miller. Orlando played without McGrady, but got a good performance from Harvey.
Indiana Pacers 87 Orlando Magic 78

Knicks go with the same 5 for the whole 3rd period in Boston, and it works for them as they went on a 27-9 run to get a 12-point lead going into the 4th. An exchange of small runs in the last quarter didn't change the lead. Anderson was big for New York in the 3rd, and they also got good games from Thomas and Mutombo. Good games from Baker and Pierce for the Celts.
New York Knicks 94 Boston Celtics 88

The Clippers kept it close for the 1st quarter, but this game was all Rockets. Ming, Francis, and Mobley had good games among the starters, and Maurice Taylor came off the bench to haunt his old team.

Maggette had a very good game for the Clips, but it wasn't enough as the Clippers lose by 15.
Houston Rockets 104 Los Angeles Clippers 89

November 23, 2003

Everyone seemed to elevate their game in the absence of Shaq. Payton, Malone, and Kobe all come up big. But so did Grant, Russell, and Slava. It was really good to see Slava out their finally. He looks bigger and, more importantly, more aware of whats going on out there. I know it's only one game, but we could see big things out of him this season.

Not that the Grizz were total push overs. They stayed close for 1½ quarters until a 14-2 run by the Lakers gave them a 10-point lead at the half. Kobe, Karl, and Bryon were big in that quarter. Then it was Gary's turn to score 13 in the 3rd as the Lakers put the game away. The defense was pretty good as the Grizz never got any big runs going.
Lakers role players contribute in win.
Memphis Grizzlies 89 Los Angeles Lakers 121

Kings starters don't play much in the 4th quarter as this one was over after the 2nd quarter. The Bulls made a good run in the 4th, but they were already 33 down. Stojakovic and Jackson had good games.
Chicago Bulls 99 Sacramento Kings 110

I guess that massive 81-point effort last night really took it out of the Raptors because they sank down to their more familiar 62-point effort today. You might notice the middle of the chart after "Raptors", there is nothing but white space.

That's because they couldn't manage to outscore the Bucks by more than 5 points points at any stretch of the game. The first time this season a team has accomplished this. It might have been the Bucks stellar defense, but I don't think so. Let's just say they didn't have to try too hard to take advantage of the situation.
Milwaukee Bucks 82 Toronto Raptors 62

Looking at the graph, it looks like the Hornets built a mountain of a 13-point lead in the middle of the 2nd quarter. Then the Pistons, after the entry of Hamilton, went on a a 13-4 run to bring them down off their mountain.

The game remained close until the Pistons built a 7-point lead with 3:24 left in the game. The Hornets responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game, and won by 1 after a Baron Davis jump shot with 1 second remaining. Magliore and Brown were also key for New Orleans.
New Orleans Hornets 81 Detroit Pistons 80

A very close game in Oakland. Blazers can only manage one run (6-0), and the Warriors two (6-0 & 12-3). That last run gave the Warriors the biggest lead of the game at 6 points. They held onto that lead in what was yet another low scoring game with both teams shooting under 40%. Must be the defense. Good game for Dunleavy.
Portland Trail Blazers 72 Golden State Warriors 78

This game was all Sonics unitl a 15-5 run late in the 3rd and a 24-11 run to start the 4th that erased their 18-point lead and gave the Wizards a 5-point lead with 5 minutes to play. But Seattle did not lose their composure and, lead by Radmonovic, put up an 11-2 spurt to get the win. Lewis with a big game also.
Washington Wizards 85 Seattle SuperSonics 88

November 22, 2003

Another Saturday night in the NBA.
Solid game from Abdur-Rahim as Hawks rebound from awful game last night. Cavs waste good game by Ilgauskas.
Cleveland Cavaliers 83 Atlanta Hawks 92

A close game til the half, Knicks 22-4 run in the 3rd puts the game away. Good perfomances from Anderson, Eisley, and Thomas.
Philadelphia 76ers 88 New York Knicks 99

Weird game. Flat line for the 1st, Toronto 24-9 run in 2nd and they probably thought it was all over. Then the Nets finally decide to start playing late in the 3rd. After all that, Raptors manage a 1-point win. Good game by Carter with help from Bosh off the Bench.
Toronto Raptors 81 New Jersey Nets 80

Very brief lead for Clippers. Then TWolves switch Hoiberg for Hassell and they go on a 28-11 run. Clips made runs at them, but Minn. just ran right back to keep the lead. Monster game from Garnett.
Los Angeles Clippers 91 Minnesota Timberwolves 99

Nuggets manage to stay close until late in the 3rd when Mavs started to pull away. That continued into the 4th quarter until Dallas had an 18-point lead. Walker starting to show why they got him with another very big game.
Denver Nuggets 98 Dallas Mavericks 115

These two trade 23-7 runs in the 1st half, then it turns into a tug-of-war in the 2nd half as Suns hang on to win by 2. Stoudemire and Marbury lead the Suns again.
Miami Heat 98 Phoenix Suns 100

November 21, 2003

I hate to sound like a broken record, but the Lakers once again have a great first quarter only to give it all away in the 2nd. The bulls 21-9 run helped them get a 5 point lead at the half. It's getting to the point where I can't watch 2nd quarters anymore.

But seriously, the Lakers managed to weather that storm and the loss of Shaq (let's hope it's not serious) and finally got it going in the 4th. Kobe really picked up the slack scoring 17 of his 28 in that period. Karl grabbed 18 rebounds. And Bryon Russell was effective on offense and defense.
Lakers win despite loss of Shaq.
Chicago Bulls 94 Los Angeles 101

This game was over after the 1st quarter. Hawks had no chance after Spurs 30-9 run to start game. Just about all the starters sat in the 4th.
Atlanta Hawks 75 San Antonio spurs 112

A rare back-and-forth game tonight where the last run wins it for Boston. Pierce and Baker have solid games.
Boston Celtics 85 Philadelphia 76ers 84

Rockets big 1st quarter doesn't hold up after Blazers even bigger run in 2nd. Randolph and Stoudemire led the way for Portland.
Houston Rockets 76 Portland Trail Blazers

What looks like a rout in the making for Hornets turned into a close game as Pacers eke out a 1-point win. Big game from Jermaine O'Neal.
Indiana Pacers 76 New Orleans Hornets 75

Grizz fight back from 10 down in the 4th to get a narrow victory. Jason Williams comes up big for Memphis with 13 in the final quarter.
Memphis Grizzlies 98 Seattle Supersonics 97

Warriors 13-2 run in the 3rd virtually ends the game. Good performance from Richardson overshadows another good one from Odom.
Miami heat 91 Golden State Warriors 101

Jazz surge in the late 3rd and early 4th quarters to beat Bucks by 11. Harpring and Kirilenko are good, as are Lopez and Borchardt off the bench.
Milwaukee Bucks 90 Utah Jazz 101

TWolves lead almost all game, and Cavs have only one small run in them tonight. Garnett and Sprewell lead Minn.
Minnesota Timberwolves 97 Cleveland Cavaliers 83

Knicks made a run in the 3rd, but Pistons lead this one the whole way. Big games again from Billups and Wallace.
New York Knicks 86 Detroit Pistons 94

This one is all Kings. No one scores over 20 for Magic and they have no defense for Kings onslaught. Another big game for Brad Miller.
Orlando Magic 92 Sacramento Kings 122

After a very quiet 1st quarter, the Nuggets got their game going tonight and ran awaw from the Wizards. Anthony, Miller, and Lenard all had good games for Denver.
Washington Wizards 87 Denver Nuggets 108

November 20, 2003

Only 2 games tonight.
Mavs build 16 point lead early in 4th quarter, then withstand 13-6 charge by Spurs to win by 3. Walker has major game tonight.
San Antonio Spurs 92 Dallas Mavericks 95

A close game in the first half, Suns get control with 12-0 run early in the 3rd. Magic make two runs at them in the 4th, but 11-2 run by Phoenix is enough to hold them off. Marbury has 14 points, 11 assists, and 4 steals.
Orlando Magic 88 Phoenix Suns 95

November 19, 2003

The Lakers looked like they were going to leave the Knicks in the dust after a pretty good 1st quarter, but once again fell flat in the 2nd. But this time they made adjustments at half that worked well, because they went on a 21-8 run to get the lead for good.

The Lakers had an unusually large advantage in free throws. Particularly for an away team. Im not sure why this was since I didn't see the game due to being at the Simon and Garfunkel concert tonight. It was groovy.

Kobe and Shaq lead the scoring as usual, but Karl was the man tonight with 17 points and 18 HelpValue (14 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers). He and Devean lead the team in rebounding from a bad rebounding performance last night.
Lakers get even in New York
Los Angeles Lakers 104 New York Knicks 83

Big games from Hughes and Thomas again Wiz beat Cavs. LeBron's 28 goes for naught.
Cleveland Cavaliers 95 Washington Wizards 101

Pistons win again as Billups goes wild again. Just one run (20-2 in the 3rd) is enough to give Detroit the win in Memphis.
Detroit Pistons 99 Memphis Grizzlies 92

Late run gets Rockets a 2-point win at home. Francis and Ming are the stars.
Golden State Warriors 83 Houston Rockets 85

Clippers keep close for 3 quarters, but only score 13 in the 4th as Pacers turn it into a rout. Indiana gets big games from Harrington and Foster.
Los Angeles Clippers 78 Indiana Pacers 91

Blazers make big comeback with 25-10 run in 4th quarter to beat Heat by 1. Wallace and Randolph lead the way again, and they get good help from the bench.
Miami Heat 93 Portland Trail Blazers 94

Nuggets rebound from dismal 63-point performance last game with win over Bucks. Many players contribute for Denver.
Milwaukee Bucks 86 Denver Nuggets 94

Hornets lead most of the way and win close game in Boston. PJ Brown with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
New Orleans Hornets 81 Boston Celtics 73

Lead goes back-and-forth until 3rd when Sixers take control. Big game for Eric Snow.
Philadelphia 76ers 81 Toronto Raptors 75

Although close, Kings lead the whole way in beating Jazz. They put it away with 13-3 run in 3rd. Brad Miller made his presence felt tonight
Sacramento Kings 118 Utah Jazz 110

November 18, 2003

If you had told me the Lakers would end up with only 8 TO to the Pistons 13, I would have assumed the Lakers would win. This area has been a constant problem so far this season.

But that advantage was more than erased by constant foul trouble for Shaq and an even larger rebounding advantage for the Pistons. The Lakers overcame these problems for 3 quarters. Then, as the chart shows, they vitually fell of the cliff in the 4th as the Pistons had the biggest period of the game with 33 points.

In the end, a 19-rebound edge will get you a win every time.
Lakers lose in Motown. Wallace with 15 rebounds and Billups with 24 points.
Los Angeles Lakers 96 Detroit Pistons 106

Clippers get a big game from Drobnjak, but it's not enough as they lose by 4 in Cleveland. Cavs get good balanced scoring.
Los Angeles Clippers 95 Cleveland Cavaliers 99

Warriors put up a fight, but not nearly enough. Duncan leads the way as Spurs win at home by 13.
Golden State Warriors 81 San Antonio Spurs 94

Hawks 20 point lead is enough to withstand 20-8 run from Bucks. Abdur-Rahim leads the way.
Atlanta Hawks 101 Milwaukee Bucks 93

The last run wins the game for the Hornets after the lead changed hands many times. Another big game for Baron Davis, this time against Jason Kidd.
New Orleans Hornets 88 New Jersey Nets 85

Down by 21 after 3 quarters, the starting five for Denver is benched for the whole 4th. Garnet has a big game and TWolves win.
Denver Nuggets 77 Minnesota Timberwolves 89

Stoudemire is the star as the Suns lead the whole way against Bulls
Chicago bulls 82 Phoenix Suns 95

Heat win close game with 23-9 run at start of 4th quarter. Odom is turning into the leader there.
Miami Heat 105 Seattle SuperSonics 98

Five games on a Monday Night NBA schedule

Van Horn has 13 in 3rd quarter and Thomas grabs 17 rebounds as Knicks make 2nd half comeback against Celtics.
Boston Celtics 86 New York Knicks 89

Ming leads Houston as the Rockets lead almost the whole game in Philly. Sixers manage only 64 points and don't break 20 in any quarter.
Houston Rockets 74 Philadelphia 76ers 66

Wizards run away from Hawks with 16-2 run in 4th. Big game for Larry Hughes, and Etan Thomas off the bench.
Washington Wizards 106 Atlanta Hawks 97

Blazers had 14 point lead after 2.5 quarters. But Mavs run right past them and win by 7. Nash, Nowitzki, and Finley all make big contributions. Big games from Wallace and Randolph go to waste
Portland Trail Blazers 98 Dallas Mavericks 105

Kirilenko and Harpring lead Jazz to narrow victory over Magic. 29 for McGrady, but only 3 in final period.
Orlando Magic 88 Utah Jazz 90

Novermber 16, 2003

In a game that was often a "procession to the freethrow line" (Chick), the Lakers played good defense and kept the turnovers down.

Kobe was player of the game, but I also liked Karl's 10 rebounds and 11 points. If he can do that every night, I will be very happy.

Can someone please tell me what is up with all the OT games this season. Another one tonight!
Lakers keep winning at home
Miami Heat 77 Los Angeles Lakers 99

Kings barely beat Warriors at home
Golden State Warriors 104 Sacramento Kings 106

This game was a like a tug-of-war; the lead slowly moving back and forth.
Bosh is the hero with 10-points in the 2 OTs.
Houston Rockets 101 Toronto Raptors 107

November 15, 2003

It seems to me there have been an extraordinary number of overtime games already this season. Two more again tonight!

Once again the Lakers start off hot in the 1st quarter, only to cool off in the 2nd. This time they found renewed energy half-way through the 3rd, going on a 13-3 run with the starting lineup.

Starting the 4th tied, the Lakers added another 13-4 run and managed to hold that lead to the end.

The scoring was nicely distributed among the Lakers starters. The bench didn't add much tonight. But Shaq was the star with 15 rebounds and 8 assists in addition to his 21 points.

Lakers got just what they needed. A nice home cooked meal of soft Raptor meat.

To the Lakers credit, they did what they were supposed to do with a team like this. And they did it in spite of 22 turnovers and poor free throw shooting. But they showed a lot more hustle on defense than in recent games. Not a great win, but encouraging.

Last game, the poor defense could be blamed on fatigue. But tonight, as in the San Antonio game, there was no excuse. Just bad D. Mix in 23 turnovers, and you have a debacle in Memphis. For those who think Devean sucks...well it's a good thing they brought him along. Or it would have been an even longer night.

November 6, 2003

I'd like to think the Lakers went into double overtime just so I could test my program out, but they really didn't have to.

Don't do me any more favors like that guys!

On a night when nothing seemed to be going the Lakers way, the main problem was too much reaching and fouling on defense. You can complain about the refs, but the Lakers can play better defense than that. Fortunately, the Lakers got some good fortune and stops late in the game. Now, on to New Orleans.

November 4, 2003

Once again the Lakers come out strong, playing good on the defensive and offensive ends of the court. But, while the offense continued, the denfense failed them starting in the 2nd period. Combine that with bad free throw shooting and lights out 3-point shooting by the Bucks, and the Lakers looked in trouble. Then, in the 4th quarter, led by Kobe's 13 points, the Lakers finally found their stride. The defense and free throws returned, and they went on an 11-0 run to win the game 113-107!

November 2, 2003

In what was a very sloppy game, the Lakers once again come out strong at the start, only to let the opponent hang around and make things interesting. This years edition of the Lakers hasn't found that killer instinct yet. But I'm sure they will, soon enough

This was the only game on today's schedule. I guess the NBA doesn't want to compete with the NFL just yet.
Golden State 72 Los Angeles 87

Lakers win their 1st squeaker of the season tonight in Phoneix. Much closer than it should have been. I think the Lakers are sill getting used to each other, and that caused defensive lapses in the 2nd half. But the balanced scoring is really impressive. The continued good play of Fisher and George, along with those other guys, bodes well for the future.

Halloween may be over, but scary things are still happening with the Timberwolves. After only 61 points last night, they managed to score a whopping 73 tonight. And won by 17! 56 points by an NBA team? As Chick used to say, someone needs a saliva test!

OK, that's all I can do tonight. The data has been pretty messed up tonight, and the Bulls/Bucks game will have to wait til morning.

Can't go without adding that Sacramento lost to Denver by 21!
Los Angeles 103 Phoenix 99

Want to see something really scarry? Take a look at the Timberwovles 61 point effort! That's what you get with a 10 point 1st quarter and a 9 point 4th.

Also interesting is the difference in substitution patterns in the Boston at Memphis game. The Grizz used a platoon style change up, while the Celtics were replacing people all over the map.

Oh, and the Clippers lose the 2nd game in Japan.
